Is Sugar-Free Soda Better for Teeth?

Sugar-free soda is just as harmful to teeth as sugar-filled alternatives. To learn how to protect your smile, call Oradell family dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter at (201) 384-9292 todayIs sugar-free soda better for teeth than sugar-filled alternatives? Not according to a new study that closely examined the impact 23 different types of drinks had on enamel erosion. According to the study’s authors, there is “no discernible difference” between the damage done to teeth from sugary and sugar-free drinks – with the exception of milk.

Does this mean that you cannot enjoy sugar-free drinks on occasion? Of course not. But care should be taken to reduce your intake of acidic beverages and to properly clean your teeth after their consumption.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of tooth enamel erosion, please call Oradell family dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter at 201-384-9292 and schedule your next appointment today.

Enamel Erosion

Enamel erosion occurs naturally with age but can be sped-up by acidic foods and beverages. With enamel erosion can come a host of discomforts including:

  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Dental cavities
  • A yellowing of the teeth

These problems can be prevented or slowed by minimizing your consumption of acidic foods and beverages, brushing after every meal and snack, flossing twice a day, and visiting our office every six months for professional cleanings and examinations. If erosion is excessive, Dr. Perlmutter can discuss treatments such as dental bonding to restore strength and prevent serious problems from arising.
