SSRIs and Implant Dentistry

A six-year study conducted by the International and American Associations for Dental Research has found that patients taking SSRIs experience dental implant failure at more than twice the rate of those who are not. The study, conducted on 490 patients with a total of 916 dental implants, found the rate of implant failure just above 10.5 percent for patients taking some of the most common antidepressants. Among patients not taking SSRIs, the rate of implant failure was closer to 4.5 percent.

SSRIs have long been known to inhibit bone regeneration and increase the risk of fractures. This is the first study looking at how these medications may interfere with implant dentistry.

It is important to remember that no prescription medication should be stopped without the support of your physician. If you are taking a medication that interferes with your dental implant candidacy, Dumont cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter would be happy to discuss alternative treatments or ways you can improve the likelihood of successful implantation during your initial consultation.
