Here is what you can expect during your routine dental prophylaxis appointment at Oradell Family Dental.
Your appointment starts with our dental hygienist, who updates your medical history and records any changes in your health. This is the right time to share any updates to your health conditions as well as if you are taking any new medications. Our hygienist also completes a visual screening for oral cancer.
Next, the hygienist will take checkup X-rays. Dental X-rays are important because they can uncover oral health concerns that are invisible to the naked eye, such as decay. Some appointments may include periodontal probing, which is a procedure where we examine your gums for disease by measuring the depth of your gum tissue with a probe. Over time, due to poor health, poor oral hygiene, age, or other factors, your gums can pull away from your teeth—creating pockets where food particles and bacteria can get stuck, which in turn can cause dental disease. A periodontal probe can assess the development of these pockets and allow Dr. Perlmutter to make further care recommendations.
Dr. Perlmutter will then perform a thorough exam of all your teeth and review your X-rays
Finally, our hygienist performs a dental cleaning, removing plaque and tartar from your teeth and gumline. The cleaning also includes polishing to make your teeth brighter; as well as flossing to remove any food particles.
