Whether you are replacing metal amalgam fillings or simply having a cavity repaired, you have two options for tooth colored fillings that will protect your tooth in a natural-looking way. For larger cavities, or in cases where additional protection is desirable, porcelain dental inlays or onlays in Oradell may be the best option.
Oradell and Dumont area cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter will take several factors into consideration when deciding whether to recommend a porcelain inlay/onlay or composite fillings for your cavity. The dental porcelain used for inlays and onlays is highly durable and offers the following benefits:
Additionally, dental porcelain can be sculpted into virtually any shape, making it ideal for dental restorations on the outside of your tooth rather than the inside where cavities are typically found. If your tooth has broken or requires the removal of tissue on a surface other than the center of the biting edge, a porcelain restoration can be made in the right shape to support the rest of the tooth structure. It will also remain resistant to wear better than composite, which is somewhat softer even after it has been cured and sealed.
When creating your porcelain dental onlay or inlay, Dr. Perlmutter will first prepare the tooth at our Oradell office by removing any unhealthy tooth material and cleaning the tooth’s surface. He will remove as little healthy tooth material as possible during this process.
Dr. Perlmutter will then take an impression of the tooth, which gets sent to a dental lab where it is used to create the porcelain dental inlay or onlay. Once the restoration is shipped back to our office, Dr. Perlmutter will check the fit and affix it into place using a strong dental cement. A dental sealant is applied to provide additional protection. The surface of the inlay or onlay is polished to create a seamless surface.
