A dental bridge is a restoration used to replace missing teeth. Oradell, NJ cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter may recommend a dental bridge if the gum and jaw bone cannot support a dental implant restoration.
Dental bridges are made in a laboratory and are comprised of all porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM). An impression of your mouth is taken and sent to the dental lab with specifications on the materials to be used. The lab creates your dental bridge and sends it back to the office, where Dr. Perlmutter will check the fit and the affix it to your mouth with adhesive. Once the dental bridge is placed in your mouth, you can eat and drink as usual.
If you care for your dental bridge, it should last as long as your teeth will naturally last. Dental porcelain has a similar hardness to your teeth’s natural enamel and is resistant to moisture and bacteria. If your dental bridge is damaged, you can simply return to the office to have it repaired.
You can care for your dental bridge the same way you care for your natural teeth. You should be aware that poor dental hygiene can result in the loss of the teeth, gum tissue, or jaw bone supporting your bridge. For that reason, it is important that you care for your teeth diligently by brushing and flossing twice daily and undergoing regular dental cleanings.
