Invisalign® is the name of a dental aligner system that has replaced traditional braces for many individuals. The treatment uses clear plastic dental trays to move teeth into better alignment, eliminating the need for uncomfortable, highly visible metal brackets and wires.
Invisalign® essentially works like traditional braces to realign crooked teeth, moving them gently over a period of time to new positions. Invisalign® is often used in conjunction with other cosmetic dentistry procedures for a complete smile makeover.
Oradell and Dumont area cosmetic dentist Dr. Howard Perlmutter will design your Invisalign® treatment. He will take 3-D images of your teeth and use the information to create a digital model for the end result of your treatment. Once your desired outcome is agreed upon, the information is sent to an Invisalign® dental lab, where a series of trays are created which will be used to realign your teeth.
The obvious benefit of Invisalign® is the absence of the uncomfortable and unattractive metal brackets and wires that comprise traditional braces. But several other benefits have made Invisalign® the most popular teeth straightening system for adults, including:
Invisalign® is comparable in cost to traditional braces, but the benefits of having a virtually invisible tooth alignment system far outweigh the cost of treatment.
Invisalign® can be used to treat almost any dental alignment problem. In some cases of severe misalignment, oral surgery may be required to help create the best possible outcome. Invisalign® will not change the size, shape, or color of your natural teeth. It will simply straighten them, providing you with a beautiful smile.
Treatment with Invisalign® is significantly more comfortable than treatment with traditional braces. Where braces pull teeth into position through tightening of arch-wire, Invisalign® gently shifts teeth into their ideal position through progressively corrective aligners. There may be some mild discomfort when aligners are switched up, but this can easily be dealt with through the use of OTC medications and will fade as your teeth adjust to their new position.
In short: Invisalign®, like all orthodontic treatment, will result in some discomfort when adjustments are made. With Invisalign®, this discomfort is typically much less intense and will often resolve in a shorter period of time.
